The idea sparked from an Instagram video showing people playing the word imposter game. I wanted to play it with my family, but the existing options on the web and the Play Store were riddled with intrusive ads, paywalls, and expensive monthly subscriptions just to access basic categories like Movies and Sports.

I set out with a clear determination: I could definitely make my own website for us to play on.

The project began as Imposter Online, featuring 10 categories and 3,000 words. Listening to active feedback from playtesting with friends at school, I quickly introduced online multiplayer lobbies alongside a unique confusion poll system, which allows players to vote if they do not recognize a word. The game soon gained traction on Reddit, bringing in thousands of active players in its first two months.

Keeping the service online proved challenging. The original website went down after a set of GitHub commits broke the paths, causing 404 errors. This led to a series of rebrands. I launched Impostery, which went down, and then Imposteria, which faced identical hosting issues. Finally, it was reborn under a completely unique identity: Impostiq. This name has zero search competitors and gives us a clean slate.

Today, I spend over 5 hours daily refining every detail. Impostiq is built with custom vector icons, refined private lobby creation, and Communigories (custom community-generated category vaults) optimized to run efficiently within Firebase free tier limits. The game is kept 100% free and ad-free as a labor of love for our growing community.
